About Montpellier

Montpellier Heritage : A thousand years of history

Montpellier, rich in its 1,000 years of history, is a particularly dynamic city that combines heritage and modernity, while being a leading economic and university hub.

Heritage lovers will be charmed by the city's atmosphere: the Place de la Comédie, an Arc de Triomphe, medieval alleyways, the oldest medical school in the world, renowned museums, and ambitious architectural works… Here, aesthetics merge with the past, present, and future! Under Mediterranean influence and bordered by mountains, the Montpellier region boasts a unique natural heritage, making it one of the richest regions in France in terms of biodiversity.

Among the major landscape ensembles of biological interest, we can mention the chain of coastal lagoons, the Camargue (the largest wetland area in France and one of the most important migration sites in Europe), the garrigues, and the calcareous steppe plateaus of the Causses, the Salagou basin, and its red lands dotted with canyons… The natural environments of the region are known for hosting a remarkable diversity of species, including many rare and threatened ones, at the edge of their range or endemic.
